The Medifast diet plan....is the quick weight loss REALLY worth it? Take a look at what you are putting into your body.

I know.
It's that time of year again.
It's almost January 1.
Most people have one thing on their mind.
How can I get this extra weight off.....and fast?

I am no different.  I still struggle with getting my weight off.
I would LOVE a quick fix.
I would LOVE to be 30 pounds lighter in 4 weeks.

I have decided to write about the Medifast diet plan
because, well...it is everywhere I turn.

It is the "buzz" word of diets.

I fell for it once.

How can you not?  I mean really?

It has so much to offer.
Fast results, very little prep, convenient...just grab a bar and go!

But have you REALLY read the labels?

Have you researched what each ingredient is and does?

I have.

I am disgusted.

I am appalled that this diet is touted as healthy.

I am equally disturbed that this diet has provided millions of dollars of income for health coaches.
The more people you get under you...the more money you make.

It might start out about "health".  I think it almost always does.
 People want to lose weight.
You have a little success and then become a health coach with Take Shape For Life.
Tthen the money starts coming in.

The blinders go on.

You never really looked at what your were eating in the first place.

You just took for granted that since someone told you it is "healthy and so good for you", it must be ok to eat.

You completely ignore that FACT that all Medifast products contain processed ingredients, artifical sweeteners, toxic chemicals .....a lot of things that are harmful to your body and you just never eat.

You ignore the fact that it's really not "healthy".  Because, after all, you have lost weight and that was your goal.

It's a pyramid scheme- no bones about that.

It IS a FAD diet.

It is NOT whole food.

It is processed garbage.

It is a money sucker.

Oh, don't get me wrong.  You will lose weight.  Your medication needs will decrease. Your blood labs will look greatly improved.

But at what risk?

So I have taken the ingredients from several of the bars, shakes, snacks, and other "food" items from the main website and looked each one up.

You know you can do this yourself, right?

It's all right there all the website.

Everything is spelled out before your very eyes.

Cut, paste, Google.
It's what I did.

Easy.

Just do it yourself and see what is in this crap.

I will start with 2 products that I looked up.  I am mainly looking at the "what is that for" ingredients.  Not all of them are bad.  But the bad ones are really bad.
Just so you know- I left out the vitamin and mineral ingredients.  They are all basically the same for every "product".  Vitamins are vitamins.

Swiss Mocha Shake
Soy protein isolate, fructose, milk protein isolate, oat fiber, natural and artificial flavor, sweet dairy whey, chicory root extract (inulin), guar gum, salt, cocoa (processed with alkali), instant coffee, dl-methionine, acesulfame potassium, artificial color (Red 40, Yellow 6, Yellow 5, Blue 1).
Let me decode this for you:
Soy protein isolate:       More about soy here                                                                 All soy products, and therefore all soy byproducts, contain phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogens are plant derived compounds that have the ability to mimic the effects of estrogen in the body. They can have a negative effect on the hormonal balances of men, women and children, including the enlargement or depression of the thyroid gland, which could lead to rapid weight gain or loss.  The method by which soy protein isolate is processed and manufactured involves acid washing it in aluminum tanks. As a result, large amounts of aluminum are placed into the finished product. Aluminum is know to be  toxic to the body, especially the kidneys, the nervous system, and the brain. In addition, nitrites and chemical flavorings are used to add flavor. These chemicals have been linked to the development of certain cancers, allergies and even Alzheimer's disease. Soy increases estrogen activity in the body. Men that consume large amounts of soy protein isolate on a daily basis may experience a reduction in sperm count or a lower libido.
Additionally 99%  of soy is genetically modified and it also has one of the highest percentages of contamination by pesticides of any of our foods.
The native protein present in soy is fragile and is easily denatured, or broken down, by the use of high temperatures required for the production of soy protein isolate and textured soy vegetable protein. The by-products of this high temperature processing results in the formation of carcinogenic nitrosamines and toxic lysinoalanine.
Because of this problem, soy protein isolate products should not be the protein of choice for the human body.
Whew!
And that is just the first ingredient!

Fructose:

  • After eating fructose, 100 percent of the metabolic burden rests on your liver. With glucose, your liver has to break down only 20 percent.
  • Every cell in your body, including your brain, utilizes glucose. Therefore, much of it is "burned up" immediately after you consume it. By contrast, fructose is turned into free fatty acids (FFAs), VLDL (the damaging form of cholesterol), and triglycerides, which get stored as fat.
  • The fatty acids created during fructose metabolism accumulate as fat droplets in your liver and skeletal muscle tissues, causing insulin resistance and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Insulin resistance progresses to metabolic syndrome and type II diabetes.
  • Fructose is the most lipophilic carbohydrate. In other words, fructose converts to activated glycerol (g-3-p), which is directly used to turn FFAs into triglycerides. The more g-3-p you have, the more fat you store. Glucose does not do this.
  • When you eat 120 calories of glucose, less than one calorie is stored as fat. 120 calories of fructose results in 40 calories being stored as fat. Consuming fructose is essentially consuming fat!
  • The metabolism of fructose by your liver creates a long list of waste products and toxins, including a large amount of uric acid, which drives up blood pressure and causes gout.
  • Glucose suppresses the hunger hormone ghrelin and stimulates leptin, which suppresses your appetite. Fructose has no effect on ghrelin and interferes with your brain's communication with leptin, resulting in overeating.
  • Click here for more info about fructose:
  • Dangers of fructose on the body

Natural and Artificial flavors: And that would be.....???  They leave ya hanging on this one.

Guar gum: A natural thinkener.  Used in many puddings, ice cream, dressings. It used to in prescription diet pills.  The guar gum would bind with liquids in the stomach and swell, causing a feeling of satisfying fullness. However, this mass of swollen guar gum would also cause dangerous intestinal and duodenal blockages. Guar gum was declared unsafe and ineffective for use as a non-prescription diet aid, although it is still used in small amounts as a food thickener and binder.   Ewwwww.....

Acesulfame potassium:

Acesulfame K contains the carcinogen methylene

chloride

Long-term exposure to methylene chloride can cause

headaches, depression, nausea, mental confusion,

liver effects, kidney effects, visual disturbances, and

cancer in humans. (Just for fun I googled methylene

chloride and this is what I found out about it: Methylene chloride, also called dichloromethane, is a volatile, colorless liquid with a chloroform-like odor. Methylene chloride is used in various industrial processes in many different industries: paint stripping, pharmaceutical manufacturing, paint remover manufacturing, metal cleaning and degreasing, adhesives manufacturing and use, polyurethane foam production, film base manufacturing, polycarbonate resin production, and solvent distribution and formulation.)

Paint stripping?!!!

Metal cleaning?!!!
Acesulfame potassium also
You really want to ingest this?

And now for my favorite:

Artificial color (Red 40, Yellow 6, Yellow 5, Blue 1)

 Nice.

Very nice Medifast people.

Very healthy.

Known to cause behavior problems in children just to

name one....

Yup.

So, to sum up this delicious nutritious shake...you

have just ingested into your body:

genetically modified soy

methylene chloride

great paint stripper

a metal cleaner

artificial food dyes

food thickener that was taken out of diet pills because

intestines were blocked

sugar

more artificial flavors of unknown origin

some milk protein

some coffee ( cause we all need more stimulants in

our lives)

some fiber(oh, that was the inulin and oat fiber)

Vitamins thrown in to make it look "healthy".

Yummy!  I don't know about you but I can't wait for

the next one of these to ingest!  This is only one out of

the 5 full of crap healthy nutritious meals you get in a

whole day!

So- on to the second "product" I looked into.  One of

the bars.

Caramel Crunch Bar

Soy Protein Isolate, Polydextrose, Maltitol Syrup,

Oligofructose, Glycerine,  Brown Rice Syrup, Peanut

Butter (Peanuts, Mono and Diglycerides, Salt, Mixed

Tocopherols), Non Fat Dry Milk, Butter, Natural and

Artificial Flavor, Rice Starch, Peanut Flour, Sunflower

Oil with tocopherol, Milk Protein Isolate, Evaporated

Cane Juice, Soy Lecithin, Fractionated Palm Kernel Oil,

Maltodextrin, Salt, Cocoa Powder, Sucralose,

Dextrose, Carrageenan, Distilled Monoglycerides.

Soy Protein Isolate: see above description...

Polydextrose:  Polydextrose, a synthetic food additive, is commonly made from the glucose in corn starch. "Dextrose" is sugar, plain and simple. Polydextrose is a sweet manufactured product from dextrose which supposedly acts like fiber. Polydextrose can cause a variety of side effects, including abdominal cramping, bloating and excessive gas.
 Very nice!

So it's sugar that makes you fart!

Maltitol Syrup:  Maltitol is a sugar alcohol, an ingredient commonly used in low-carb or “sugar-free” products such as candy and nutrition bars. It is used so much because of its similarity to sugar in terms of taste, mouth feel, and interaction with other ingredients. Products which use maltitol and other sugar alcohols as sweeteners can be called “sugar free.” It also causes intestinal gas and cramping, but some people may find themselves with diarrhea. If you decide to eat products with maltitol, you’d be wise to start with a small amount and judge the reaction -- as well whether you’ll be in a crowded room a few hours later.

Polydextrose, Maltitol Syrup, Oligofructose,Evaporated

Cane Juice,Dextrose- Wow!  That is a whole lot of

SUGAR!!!!!  When it comes to sugar, virtually all forms

will be toxic to your health in the long run. Switching

from refined white sugar to cane sugar, date sugar,

coconut sugar, brown rice syrup, fruit juice, molasses,

maple syrup, sucanat, sorghum, turbinado or agave

syrup will NOT ameliorate any of the risks as they all

contain HIGH amounts of fructose.

Peanut Butter:  Some facts about peanuts you should

know...A 1993 study demonstrated 24 different t

types of fungi that colonized the inside of the

peanuts used in the report (Costantini, A. Etiology

and Prevention of Atherosclerosis. Fungalbionics

Series.1998/99). And this was after the exterior of the

peanut was sterilized! So, when you choose to eat

peanuts, not only are you potentially eating these

molds, but also their mycotoxins. (Incidentally, in the

same study the examiners found 23 different fungi on

the inside of corn kernels.)

Peanut flour: read above statement...

Soy lechitin: Already stated why soy  is bad.....any

soy....

Fractionated Palm Kernel Oil: Palm Kernel Oil is the vegetable equivalent of wax. It defies the most robust of digestive enzymes and scoots right through your bowels at illegal speeds. You will burp a lot meanwhile. "Fractionated" means "cooked at high temperatures in the presence of a catalyst to break it down" - into a slightly more digestible form. It will still scoot through your bowels, but just below illegal speeds.  Oh, goody!

Maltodextrin: a thickening agent almost always made

from cornstarch.   Remember the statement from the

peanuts? Same with corn.  Corn is universally

contaminated with mycotoxins.  Eat ANY corn product

and you are ingesting fungus and mycotoxins.  Keep

this in mind since many of the Medifast products

contain corn!

Sucralose is in fact a synthetic chemical that was

originally cooked up in a laboratory. It does start off

as a sugar molecule. Then, in a five-step patented

process of making sucralose, three chlorine molecules

are added to a sucrose (sugar) molecule. The

chemical process to make sucralose alters the

chemical composition of the sugar so much that it is

somehow converted to a fructo-galactose molecule.

This type of sugar molecule does not occur in

nature, and therefore your body does not possess the

ability to properly metabolize it. Splenda bears more

chemical similarity to DDT than it does to sugar.

Carrageenan: a thickening agent. It's the vegetarian
equivalent of casein, the same protein that is isolated
from milk and used to thicken foods. Casein is also
used to produce paints, and is the glue used to hold
a label to a bottle of beer. Carrageenan is the magic
ingredient used to de-ice frozen airplanes sitting on
tarmacs during winter storms.

So- to sum up the Caramel  Crunch Bar...you have just ingested:
soy protein (bad for you)
milk protein
Sugar that gives you gas
Sugar alcohol that gives you more intestinal discomfort
Sugar with about 6 different names
sugar from brown rice
mycotoxins from peanuts
fungi from peanuts
aflatoxins from peanuts
peanut flour mycotoxins
fractionated pooping oil
 something similar to DDT
airplane de-icer!
glue for labels
mycotoxins from maltodextrin
those artificial flavors from unknown origin again
some vitamins and minerals ( because after all this stuff is supposed to be healthy)

Alright! I am feeling healthier by the  minute!  In 2 meals I am amazed at all the complete garbage healthy ingredients just ingested.
And I paid for it with good hard earned money!

And I still have 3 more of these left to go for the day!
Stay tuned.....it only gets worse better from here.

The blinders need to come off people.

See this for what it is.

Money making processed, contaminated, artificial, cancer causing junk.

Don't ruin your body just to lose a few pounds.

It's not worth it.

Be smart. Read labels.
If you don't know what the ingredient is......
google it for pete's sake.

Seriously people.

You might as well just eat some pop tarts, wash it down with some V-8 juice and take a multivitaim.

It's really about the same thing.

And you will save a lot of money.

YOU GO GIRL!!!!!!!!!!! I have always been offended by the Medifast "marketing". People (many people) who hadn't given a hoot about me before all of a sudden came running to me once they "found" Medifast and so desperately wanted to "help me". They didn't want to help me, they saw I was overweight and therefore a dollar sign. Many dollar signs. These were ALL people from within the church. UGG it still makes me angry. I'm proud of you and I for one have seen the big changes in you. YOU GO!!!! So there.

You are so brave for writing this! I have felt the same way about the medifast; I have seen results in many friends, but I can't get past the ingredients. I actually read on the Medifast site that it's fine to eat like this while you are trying to lose the weight, and then you can go organic once you are at your goal weight. (I am paraphrasing.) But I am sure that most people who have lost a lot of weight are afraid to eat anything not on the plan.
I am grossed out by the ingredient list on a jar of fat-free peanut butter, so I can't imagine eating some of the Medifast stuff.

You are amazing for posting this. More people I know are starting to do this diet, and I had to prove them that it is awful. There were many warning signs that helped me realize this was fake, but I needed something that would scare them so badly that tey woud run away from this and eithr stop or never try it. In school I'm presenting a Health Article and your stuff is my source. I'm showing this to a much people as I can, for I don't want these things to happen to them. Once I show them I know this will scare people and thanks to you not only you helped people by posting this but also few more that only have seen fake reviews. You are epic

Aspen-You have made my day!! I am so glad you found this on my blog. My whole blog is about fungus....but I have several "friends" who sell this stuff for a living. THey make huge amounts of money off of it. (Don't get me started!) So although these posts about Medifast were not about fungus....God truly called to be bold and write the truth. I never looked at the labels when I did Medifast years ago. Never. I was told by my "health coach" (which is a joke, I am sorry...a health coach is someone who should be teaching you how to eat healthy things, not crap like this!) that this was "so good for me with all the vitamins and the soy protein was so good". Well, I have come to learn otherwise.....and felt strongly to expose Medifast for what it is. A huge company preying off the desperation of people wanting to lose weight quickly. They make billions off this junk. And that is all it is. Junk in a wrapper. It's all processed, genetically modified, artificial everything.....it's just horrible to think of all the people who are putting this in their bodies thinking they are doing something good. It's all about losing the weight fast. This day and age that's all people are focused on. They hear someone else lost 100 pounds in 13 weeks on it and they want to do it too! Never bothering to even research what they are eating. Well, it didn't take me long to google each ingredient and find out how bad this stuff really is. It grieves me to think of all the health issues that will follow from people eating Medifast. Please share this blog and these articles with anyone you can! On Facebook, Twitter.....the truth needs to be told. I am so proud of you that you are standing up for the truth and even going to extra mile to make sure your friends don't fall in the Medifast pit. It's a pit that 's hard to get out of....and those who fall will suffer consequences with their health.....even if they are all excited about the weight loss....their bodies will suffer.

I am at a loss for words, I have been struggling with my weight for my entire life. When I moved to Oregon from California, I was introduced to this program from a friend of the family. I had never heard of it down south, but was instantly sold! Started right away and to my surprise the weight fell off of me, I was in a size 4 within 6 months. But within a blink of an eye and a few careless months, I has gained all of it back! Soooo quickly! I wasn't eating terribly either, just wasn't fully on program. I was so sad and depressed about the weight gain, after Christmas my New Years resolution was to go back on program and lose the weight yet again. This time I lost 25 pounds the first month and then stalled. A really good friend of mine told me to do some research on the ingredients and it sent me into a tailspin! I couldn't believe what I found, including this blog! I'm so sad and feel so taken advantage of! I have spent money that I didn't have on this food that has been destroying my body! It makes me wonder if some of the abnormal cells that have been found since starting this "lifestyle" change could be directly related to the nasty program food I have been freely putting into my body the past 3 years?!?! Thank you for sharing this information, I have decided that my life is far more valuable to me then paying to slowly commit suicide!

Nicole, you are NOT alone! I am so glad you know the truth now about this junk! It's maddening to me that this can be called "healthy". Grieves me that so many follow this diet plan.

I too was on the medifast diet plan, and signed up as a health coach. Then I started learning about soy and GMO's. I learned that almost all their meals are made from gmo soy! this is shocking. I immediately quit the program and threw away all my food!

Hi there, i just found your site and am so happy it confirmed what i had a sneaking suspicion of regarding Medifast.
I was tinkering with going on it but am so scared about Soy and estrogen and all that jazz.

Is there any shake-based program you do approve of? I bought some GNC Lean Shakes to try because, despite them having SOME of the things you talked about in them, i think they are the safest i have found out there.
I have a LOT of weight to lose, am NOT doing surgery, and need something to start me off rather quickly and then of course, i will do something more sound and slow and just learn to eat healthy natural foods.
But i do need a startoff point and i feel the only place to jump off from is these GNC shakes.

I will read more on your blog to see if i see more info.

Thank you for writing what you did!

My Husband and I have been on Medifast for a few months. A few days ago we had doctor's appointments. We went for blood tests about one week prior. Did we loose weight? Yes, about ten pounds each. The PROBLEM is the fact that my cholesterol went up 8 points and my sugars went up also. Look at the labels and see how much sugar you are taking in with this "food". My husband's sugars were up also. Our LDL's were higher (lousy cholesterol) probably because of the Fractionated Palm Kernel Oil in the bars. (Look this up to see how bad this REALLY is.) We had one every afternoon. There is nothing like a sensible diet and exercise. There are no quick fixes. It took a long time to gain, it will take some time to get off. You have to make lifestyle choices. I think there are better ways to loose weight than using Medifast.

My Dietician said that they had 2 cases of heart Arrhythmia at the Clinic who were using Medifast. She told me to quit taking the products immediately because of my heart risk and the nutrional value of Medifast vs Whole Foods.

I have to share this with you all...I emailed my "health Coach" and told her how I felt about Medifast, you have to read her response! I will have to post this in parts, too may characters...

My email to her:
Hi Dr.X -
I have this deep gut feeling about the food I'm eating and how unhealthy and horrible tasting it is. I am doing the bars and the shakes but that doesn't teach me how to prepare healthy food and I don't see this being a good role model for my son, an easy fix does not secure health for life. I do see the health benefits of eating 5 small meals a day and include veggies and protein in each meal, and also cutting down on fats, gluten, carbs and starches, which should never be cut completely out of the diet. Medifast just does not encompass whole body, well being living, it's a false flag for hope, it's just like the other weight-loss programs with the food prepackaged for lazy people. I find it costs me more buying this food plus the food my family and I have to eat as well. I'm happy that it worked for you Christine...really, I don't have any health conditions other than the ones that happen naturally with age, i'm not taking any medications for anything. I don't think I will be purchasing food next month, thank you for trying to get me thinner than I am, I was looking for something to get me back to my old self, just not in this way.

Take care,
Me

Part 2

The email she sent me:
Hello Kim!

It's good to hear from you. I had been trying to contact you via text, but no luck? You can rest assured that meals from Medifast are formulated to be the highest quality protein and nutrition. Perhaps, one aspect of the program I haven't conveyed well enough is the Bionetwork of support provided in the form of doctor & nurses calls, weekly webinars, online blogs, all available for free. I highly recommend reading Dr. Walter Andersen's Habits of Health book outlining how to create and sustain a lifetime of healthy eating and exercising habits. He is the co-founder of Take Shape For Life who grew frustrated with treating his cardiology patients for conditions that were absolutely avoidable, simply by losing weight! We have over 50 patients actively losing unwanted pounds. In these few short months I have patients that have fallen in love with a new mate, conceived a baby, reversed their diabetes and high blood pressure. Some of my patients just wanted to lose the last 10 pounds and feel confident they could achieve a goal they set for themselves. It has been very rewarding for me personally; to be a part of the health revolution. So many of my colleagues have literally given up on their patients, instead I offer them a solution that has been prescribed by over 20,000 physicians and helped over 1 million people on their quest to a longer, healthier life.

Our "5&1" phase is only for weight loss, followed by a transition plan that reintegrates the few things that are eliminated during the critical fat burning stages. This system has been engineered to truly burn fat, especially belly fat, while retaining critical muscle mass. Following our guidelines, fruits, low fat dairy and whole grains are reintegrated slowly to allow for the balance of calories in/calories out. This makes Medifast the best system for weight loss and maintenance of all the types of programs out there (ie Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, Nutrisystem). *See Consumer Reports article attached.* There are many ways to achieve a healthier weight, but the Take Shape For Life program eliminates the guess work, and the challenge to find the way eat right and lose weight for folks like myself who work 40+ hours a week. Shopping (or even growing your own food), preparing and transporting meals by any other means will amount to more expense guaranteed. At $2 a meal, you cannot find a consistently more affordable or convenient short term option for healthy eating.

I'm really sorry you have made the decision to discontinue the Take Shape for Life plan in the first month. It reflects on my skills as a health coach if I did not provide the education and constant communication that may have made the difference for you. Whatever path you choose, make it a healthy one! It's not a "cost" but really an "investment" in your future. I wish you the best in your efforts to achieve and maintain health!

Take Care,
Dr. X

She didn't care about me at all...it shows in this email, it's all about her and how bad she looks! Cray-Cray White Coat!

I'm telling you it's like a cult! The health coaches ALL have the same response. It's like they have a recording that they just play over and over. I hear it all the time. "Get America Healthy"! Really?? By getting them to eat processed, artificial crap??
Health coaches may start out with good intentions because of their own weight loss success. But then the brainwashing begins. They think Dr. Anderson walks on water and they hang on every word he has to say.. So glad you stopped before doing damage to your body.

I lost 50 lbs on the plan and when i stopped losing weight i also stopped feeling well-- thinning hair and nails, no energy, disillusionment, and fear set it. I felt it reflected on me. I brought my concerns to my "coach" (a doctor) and her response was to just get stricter-- how many teaspoons of milk went in my coffee? Did you eat the cucumber in your cucumber water? These were real questions she asked. When I expressed concern about the soy content, since i historically have out-of-whack estrogen levels, she basically just brushed it off. Every concern I had always got looped back to trusting the program, and then asking how I felt about being a coach. I stopped feeling like a client or patient, and started feeling like an asset. I cried angry tears because when I woke up to that, my heart broke and my dream of weight loss burst. I gained all 50 back, and I have a box of food left in my kitchen. Medifast served to reinforce all of my self-doubt and fear, and left me broken.

I am so sorry you had so many issues with this diet. It really should be taken off the market but it never will be. Way too much money being made off of it at the expense of people's health. I just heard today that a friend of a friend's husband is now in the ER and will have to have emergency gallbladder surgery. He has lost a lot of weight on this diet VERY quickly which is so dangerous. Now he is going to pay the price. Please don't give up hope on being healthy! You don't need prepackaged crap to lose weight! You need real food. Go back to my tabs and read about what happens when too much yeast can overtake your body. Fungus is the root of about 99% of all diseases. Please don't let Medifast win! They already took your money and your health. Throw away the box you have left over. Burn it if you want to! Start over with a clean slate and put Medifast behind you. Go to www.knowthecause.com for more information about fungus and the phase one diet or it's on one of my tabs on my blog. You can do this!

Seems everyone I know is losing weight on this diet. I need to lose 15 to 20 pounds, but I can't use,Medifast because of soy. I had an estrogen driven cancer amd was told by doctor to,stay away from soy in all forms. I have tasted a few of their foods and don't think i could have stayed on the plan anyway.
